After expulsion from his school because of a violent act of vandalism, 17-year-old Bobby Neuman is brought by his mother, Amelia, to stay with his grandfather in Virginia. His grandfather, Walter, is a cantankerous, solitary individual, but allows the boy to stay for Amelia’s sake, since she is starting a new job and needs (by court order) for someone to watch Bobby. Bobby bristles at the thought of being kept at Walters’, but soon finds a friend, confidant and crush in Diana, a young widow living next door. As four weeks stretch into seven, and with the disappearance of Amelia shadowing a similar fate of Bobby’s long-absent father, Walter and Bobby learn to appreciate each other, despite the life choices both have made.
